Overview

Rwanda a country of a thousand hills is beautiful, unique and historical. On this 6 day Rwanda Primates and Wildlife Safari to Nyungwe and Akagera National Parks both in Rwanda, you will experience the Nyungwe Rainforest which in fact is the largest swathe of montane left in east and central Africa and here you have optional activities to choose from; canopy walk, chimpanzee tracking, nature walks, and bird watching also the Akagera National Park where you will take a boat trip and have game drives to see a variety of wildlife and a number of birds. You will also have a tour into the city of Kigali Rwanda’s capital to visit the Genocide Memorial Site at Gisozi – for many visitors; a visit to the Memorial is such an emotional and touching experience.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will receive a welcome from our representative / your tour and driver guide who will then transfer you to a hotel within Kigali. Whilst at the hotel, you will be briefed about the tour and the next day’s travel schedule. Depending on your arrival time, you may have a short tour around Kigali with the highlight being a visit to the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi.

Day 2
To Huye (formerly Butare) then to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After an early morning breakfast, you will leave Kigali for a departure journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park. En-route to Nyungwe, you will have two stop overs that is in Nyabisindu (formerly known as Nyanza) and in Butare (known to be the second largest and intellectual city of Rwanda). In Nyanza, you will visit the King’s palace and the seat of the outdated monarchy. In Butare, you will visit the National Museum that is regarded as the best Ethnographic museum in East Africa with rich information about the cultural history of Rwanda. After the museum visit, you will be entertained by amazing folklore performances from the Intore dancers before the lunch break in Butare. After lunch, you then proceed to Nyungwe Forest. Nyungwe Forest is, in fact, the largest swathe of montane forest left in East or Central Africa. It harbours about 275 different birds, hundreds of butterflies and orchids, and over 75 different species of mammals – including 13 primates (about a quarter of all Africa’s primates). Prior to reaching your accommodation, your tour and driver guide will stop at the park offices at Uwinka for any important updates in preparation for your next day’s activities.

Day 3
In Nyungwe Forest National Park

Early morning breakfast and then report to the Uwinka tourist information centre for briefing prior to participation in any of the activities. Depending on your personal interests, you can choose from a list of activities in Nyungwe as below!!

  • Chimpanzee trekking ($90 pp)
  • Bird watching for a day ($70 pp)
  • Canopy walk ($60 pp)
  • Guided nature walks and hikes (there are different beautiful trails available but the superb waterfall trail of Gisakura is probably the most rewarding, guided primate walks etc). Nyungwe Forest is the only place in Africa where troops of 300 black-and-white colobus monkeys can be seen jumping in the trees! An amazing sight!

Day 4
To Akagera National Park

Day 4:

You will have an early morning breakfast before leaving for Akagera National Park. You will pass via Kigali and Kayonza before reaching Akagera National Park that is found in the Eastern part of Rwanda against the Tanzanian border. The park is named for the Kagera River which flows along its eastern boundary feeding into several lakes the largest of which is Lake Ihema. The complex system of lakes and linking papyrus swamps makes up over 1/3 of the park and is the largest protected wetland in Central Africa.

Day 5
In Akagera National Park

Enjoy the entire day exploring the park! You will begin your day with an early morning breakfast and with your picnic lunches, you will proceed for a morning boat trip on Lake Ihema. Look out for animals large numbers of hippos, the huge Nile crocodiles and plenty of birds whilst on the boat trip! After the boat trip, you will spend the rest of day on a game drive exploring the park with lots of animals to be encountered giraffes, buffaloes, large herds of zebras, elands, topis among others.

Day 6
To Kigali and departure

A departure journey back to Kigali. If you missed the opportunity of exploring Kigali upon arrival and depending on your departure time, you will have a Kigali City Tour. The highlight of the city tour is a visit to the Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. For many visitors, a visit to the memorial is such an emotional and touching experience! We will then bring you directly to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight home.
